Banyak kelebihan MODPlug bila dibanding dengan 2 software yang sebut di atas, antara lain :
- Tidak menuntut spesifikasi komputer yang tinggi, karena MODPlug dapat dijalankan di komputer jadul sekalipun. Tentunya semakin tinggi spesifikasi komputer anda, hasilnya akan semakin baik.
- Tidak memerlukan pengetahuan teori musik dalam penggunaanya. Jika anda bisa mengetik di komputer, berarti anda juga bisa menggunakan software ini. Yang diperlukan adalah kita tahu "doremifasollasido" akan lebih baik jika kita bisa memainkan salah satu instrumen musik seperti gitar atau pianika, itupun hanya sekedar ala kadarnya saja.
- MODPlug bisa kita dapatkan secara Gratis atau freeware. Anda bisa mendapatkan software ini di situs www.modplug.com
- Banyak jenis suara instrumen yang disediakan MODPlug secara default dalam folder GM.DLS atau yang biasa kita sebut dengan Sound Bank. Dari jenis suara standar seperti gitar, piano, drum set, strings hingga jenis-jenis efek suara seperti suara angin, hujan, ombak, kereta, tembakan dan lain-lain.
- Secara kualitas, musik yang dihasilkan MODPlug tidak kalah dengan software yang berbayar.
Saat pertama kali kita menjalankan MODPlug kita akan diminta untuk mengatur setup MODPlug pada komputer kita, anda bisa mengabaikan ini dengan klik apply kemudian OK, karena secara otomatis MODPlug akan mendeteksi system pada komputer anda. Jika suatu saat anda ingin mengubah setup, pada toolbar sorot view, klik setup.
Jika sudah anda akan dibawa ke halaman utama MODPlug.
Dalam Interface MODPlug terdapat beberapa bagian yaitu :
- Menu utama yang terletak pada bagian atas
- Toolbar yang terletak di bawah menu
- Tree yang berisi folder tentang informasi sumber-sumber yang dipakai dalam lagu terletak pada bagian kiri
- Tab-tab utama, terdiri dari General, Patterns, Samples, Instruments dan Comments.
- Song Title > untuk mengisi judul lagu anda
- Song Type > terdapat 4 type MOD yang dipakai oleh MODPlug dengan ekstensinya masing-masing yaitu, Pro Tracker (MOD), Impulse Tracker (IT), Scream Tracker (S3M) dan Fast Tracker (XM), namun meneurut saya semua itu tidak berpengaruh banyak selama kita menggunakan MODPlug sebagai player-nya. Pada bagian ini juga kita bisa menambah atau mengurangi jumlah Channel sesuai dengan keinginan kita. Klik Change dan ubah sesuai kebutuhan anda.
- Initial Settings > Pada bagian ini bisa kita mengubah Tempo lagu dalam hitungan beat per minutes (bpm), Speed atau cepat lambatnya lagu, Global Volume untuk mengubah besar kecilnya volume lagu.
- Effects > Kita bisa mengubah hasil musik yang kita buat dengan cara menambahkan efek standar yang ada. Bass Expansion untuk membuat suara bass lebih dominan, Reverb untuk menambah suara lebih bergema, Surround hampir sama fungsinya dengan Reverb, Graphic Equalizer berfungsi untuk menyesuaikan hasil musik sesuai dengan pengaturan Equalizer pada saat pertama kita setup.
- Resampling untuk mengatur kualitas output. Pilihlah selalu High Quality.
Pada Tab Patterns kita bisa menambahkan pattern sesuai dengan kebutuhan lagu anda dengan cara klik Insert Pattern yang terdapat tepat di bawah tab General. Secara default ModPlug menyediakan pattern dengan jumlah 64 row atau lajur (angka 0 sampai 63). Kita bisa menambahkan jumlah row maksimal sampai dengan 256 row dengan cara klik tab #0 pada sudut kiri pattern ( tanda #0 jika anda akan menambah row pada pattern 0, bila yang ingin anda ubah adalah pattern 1 maka tampilannya adalah #1 dan seterusnya.
Di dalam Pattern terdapat Channel yaitu tempat anda menempatkan instrument, misal anda ingin menempatkan gitar pada channel 0, kemudian bass pada channel 1, piano pada channel 2 dan seterusnya. Jumlah channel ini bisa anda tambah atau kurangi sesuai kebutuhan instrument yang anda pakai.
Pada tab ini pula akan terlihat semua daftar instrument yang anda pakai. Untuk menambahkan instrument terdapat pada tab Instruments.

Di sini kita bisa melihat tampilan graphic dari instrument yang kita pilih.

Pada bagian inilah kita harus memasukan instrument-instrument yang akan kita pakai untuk membuat lagu.
Langkah-langkahnya adalah sebagai berikut :
- Pada Tree kita pilih GM.DLS dan buka forlder sound bank yang ada, misal anda ingin memakai instrumen gitar, maka buka folder Melodic, cari instrument gitar tersebut, sorot kemudian drag and drop pada layar yang berwarna hitam.
- Untuk menambah instrumen lagi klik New Instrument pada sudut kiri atas di bawah tab general, kemudian ulangi langkah pertama di atas dan seterusnya sesuai jumlah kebutuhan instrument lagu anda.
Yang perlu anda lakukan adalah menambah sound bank untuk jenis instrument gitar, banyak sound bank gitar yang tersedia secara gratis di internet dalam format Sound Fonts dengan ekstensi .sf2. Anda bisa mendapatkan sound fonts gratis di www.sf2midi.com atau dengan cara googling dengan kata kunci yang anda inginkan, misal "free metal guitar sf2" dan lain-lain.
Tab Comments
Pada tab comments anda bisa menambahkan informasi tentang lagu anda, Judul Lagu, Nama Pencipta Lagu dan seterusnya.
